BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The first band in Kinglassie was formed
around 1934. Most collieries with a village sustained by it had pipe
bands; Kinglassie was no exception.
When Sandy Burnside became Pipe Major in 1948, the band was
undefeated in Grade 2 and was promoted mid-season to Grade 1 just
before the World Championships that year. In
1951 the band was 2nd in the Grade 1 world championships at Dundee,
just half a point behind Edinburgh City PolicePipe Band.
Five members of the 1951 band
were Fife Open Solo piping champions and six players were to become
Pipe Majors in later years, as far afield as Canada and America.
Pit closures and the loss of
key players meant the band was dispanded in the early sixties.
The band was reformed in 1984
and entered competition again as a grade 4 band in 1987, winning
first prize at Strathmiglo Games in their first competition on over
20 years.
At the
end of the 1988 season, the band was promoted to grade 3 after
winning 10 trophies and taking 4th, 5th and 6th places respectively
at the European, World and Cowal Championships.
